After tremendous outcry, the Barefoot Gen ban has been overturned. In August, Barefoot Gen was removed from Matsue City school libraries because it was considered an “ultra-leftist manga that perpetuated lies and instilled defeatist ideology in the minds of young Japanese.” Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Minister Hakubun Shimomura supported the decision, explaining that the manga was “harmful to youth” with its depictions of violence and chaos in Japan in the 1940-50’s.
